One stop shop a hit with parents
Tara Scaglione, Innisfail Province

Parents and children flocked to the arena on Tuesday and Wednesday night to check out extra-curricular activities at the Town of Innisfail’s annual spring registration night.

Various sport teams and other clubs, including everything from inline hockey and junior lacrosse, to water polo and air cadets, set up booths where parents can get information and sign up their kids.

Carla Gabert, a mother of four, said having all the clubs in one place not only allows children to see what options are available to them, but it’s convenient for parents.

"It’s great," she said. "You don’t have to run around all over the place getting all your kids signed up."

Her daughter, five-year-old Emma, signed up for minor soccer. Emma said she has her heart set on being a goaltender.

When asked if she thought she was too small to keep the balls out, she confidently replied: "I’ll just kick the ball when it comes near me. That’s easy."

Not all activities and clubs were solely for children though; the town, besides offering spring break and summer day camps, also offers free parenting classes, and the Let Them Be Kids group offers parents the unique opportunity to assist in constructing a neighbourhood playground later this spring.

Tamara Hagel, along with daughter Cassie, 7, signed up for the Innisfail Garden Club, which allows both parents and children to sign up for some family fun.

Hagel said that the registration night gives people the chance to become a part of the community through the locally offered clubs.

Heather Fletcher, a community facilitator with the Town of Innisfail, said that the registration nights, which take place in spring and fall, are also helpful for newcomers.

"It’s important for new residents to see that Innisfail has a lot of options," she said.

For more information on the programs and services offered in the community, there is a free Community Program Guide available at the town office.
