A feast for the eyes
Tara Scaglione, Innisfail Province

A local woman has found a unique way to donate.

Teresa Rolvink has spent hours upon hours crocheting a depiction of The Last Supper, and now that it is finally finished, she will be donating it to the Innisfail Hospital’s Auxiliary so they can raffle it off to raise money.

Rolvink, who taught herself how to crochet when she was a teenager, has completed a number of crochet art pieces. She said she likes doing religious-themed pieces, such as the Lord’s Prayer, The Shepard, and of course The Last Supper. The majority of these she has given away to friends as special gifts.

"I just like giving gifts to people, I really do," said Rolvink.

The depiction of the Last Supper is the largest piece she’s done to date. It was made with lightweight, very fine crochet cotton. It took her nearly four months to complete, and the process was sometimes difficult.

"I got to about the 125th row and I couldn’t get past that for about two weeks because I wasn’t reading it right, holy moly," said Rolvink.

The Last Supper is so big, in fact, that the hospital auxiliary is concerned about how they’ll raffle it off. Mary Myers, president of the auxiliary, said the piece is too large to be moved easily, and hopes that someone from the community will come forward and purchase it, perhaps as a legacy to a loved one.

"We are just so happy about her doing this for the hospital," said Myers.

Myers also added that the value of the item is also considerably larger than what the group normally handles.

Besides taking up a lot of time, the pieces can be costly to frame. Because it was so large, The Last Supper cost Rolvink $866 to frame. Rolvink is also framing a smaller picture, this one of a bird among some flowers, which she will also be donating to the hospital.

The first time Rolvink did The Last Supper was in 1968, and it has remained a favorite. She remembered seeing an ad for the pattern in an American magazine, and the lady with the pattern sent it for free.

Rolvink also knits frequently, making everything from sweaters to Barbie clothes. Rolvink said that she won’t be making another Last Supper again, at least not anytime soon.
