Experiments and big ideas come to IMS Submitted
Spring has sprung and so have science fairs in Innisfail.
Here at Innisfail Middle School, we have been busy getting ready for our annual science fair. In December, students were invited to attend an information meeting explaining the concept of a science fair and ideas for projects. After Christmas break, lunch meetings on Thursdays and Fridays were held weekly to help students develop their knowledge of the scientific process. Students also had the opportunity to work on projects in school, after school and at home.
Science fairs encourage students to seek the quest of knowledge. First they pose a question, and then they develop the process needed to solve the problem and finally displaying their results in an attractive manner. This once-a-year fair gives students the opportunity to deeply research or develop answers to questions of personal interest.
On Thursday, March 4, volunteers from the Innisfail High School biology class judged five projects. This year’s winners were: in the elementary category was Baily Wygiera with his display, "Where to store your popcorn." In first place of the secondary category were Emily Lucas and Courtney Dixon displaying "Is IMS Eco-Friendly?" In second place were Ryley Newsham and Kade Bilton showcasing "Pyrotechnics." In third place, Sami Bennett and Dakota May presented "The Woosh Factor," and in fourth place was Shaelynn Gagne and Samatha Moreau with their "Rock vs. Foil" project.
The top two winners in each category will be attending the Central Alberta Regional Science Fair in Red Deer at the Bower Place Shopping Centre on March 26 and 27. These projects will again be judged on the evening of March 26 and the public is welcome to view projects from all over Central Alberta on the Saturday.
