Innisfail library assists visually impaired Justina Contenti, Innisfail Province
The Innisfail Public Library is working to create awareness about a piece of technology that can help those who are visually impaired.
The Victor Reader is a machine that enlarges print for those who either have lost some of their vision or have always been visually impaired.
The reader has a sliding platform on which you can place any kind of book or document and it magnifies the print onto a large computer screen. The level of magnification can be chosen by the user and the platform slides back and fourth for easy reading.
The Victor Reader was donated by the Royal Bank of Canada several years ago in celebration of their 100th anniversary and while it has got a fair bit of use, the number of people using the machine has been declining, said Colleen Hayden, from the library.
“I think it’s just that people don’t know about. In our area, there is one in Innisfail and one in the library at Autumn Glen,” said Hayden.
There are several other resources available at the library to those who are visually impaired, including at least 150 large print books, as well as books on tape. These resources are rotated throughout the Parkland Regional Library system to make sure they are always getting in new books.
