Japanese exchange students come to Innisfail Justina Contenti, Innisfail Province
The Alberta 4-H Exchange Program and the LEX LABO Japanese Exchange Program worked together to get 21 Japanese students to Canada for one month this summer. The Japanese students have been paired with host families from all over the province and are visiting Canada to learn more about the language, culture, people and to broaden their outlook on life, said Sylvia Matheson, the west central region co-ordinator for the Alberta 4-H Exchange Program.
Ten of the students and host families took a trip to the Discovery Wildlife Park in Innisfail on Tuesday, Aug. 3. Many of the students have had the chance to travel around the province with their host families and have commented to their chaperones that they are amazed by the vast amount of open space in Canada, said Matheson.
“The children’s lives have changed very much (by the experience.) I have never seen such big smiles,” said Kyoko Ogura, the Japanese exchange chaperone.
Several Alberta students are currently in Japan, some of them on longer two-month exchanges.
