Local player in the running for Team Alberta, Team Canada
Local hockey player Taryn Baumgardt will be donning a Hockey Canada jersey in Blaine, Minn. this week.
Baumgardt attended the Team Canada U-18 women’s selection camp held in Calgary Aug. 3-11. She’s been named to a 22-player squad that will play in the U.S. in a three-game series from Aug. 16-Aug. 19.
She’s one of seven defence players selected, according to a press release from Hockey Canada. Forty players were on the ice during the selection camp in Calgary.
Being named to the games in Blaine doesn’t guarantee Baumgardt will be part of Team Canada at the IIHF Ice Hockey U-18 Women’s World Championship in Finland next year. The press release says that following the series in the States, Hockey Canada scouts and the U-18 coaching staff will continue to evaluate the players throughout the upcoming hockey season.
Baumgardt is having a good summer season. She’s been short-listed for Team Alberta after participating in a selection camp in July. A press release from Hockey Alberta said the top 27 players will play in a tournament in Edmonton in September and then will be scouted during the regular season until the team that will compete at nationals in November is named.
