Singer-songwriter releases debut album
On his 16th birthday David Walsh was told by his father he could either get a motorbike or guitar. He chose the guitar, and hasn’t looked back since.
Walsh, 33, just released his debut album, David Walsh & The Friendly Fire.
“I always liked music. I used to listen to the radio and try and play along with it,” he said of his humble beginnings.
Walsh grew up in Newfoundland and about 10 years ago moved to Alberta. He completed a two-year music course at Red Deer College and has lived in Innisfail for three years.
While he dabbles with other instruments — Walsh can play the banjo and mandolin as well as the guitar -- his main focus is on writing and he has been drafting songs seriously for the past decade.
He released an EP, Up in the Air, last summer when in Ontario recording his current CD. His music from Up in the Air caught the attention of CBC execs and was featured in season five of the TV show Heartland.
His music, an indie/folk pop genre is now getting played on Calgary-based station CKUA. He also recently heard from CBC radio in the east and has been told his music will be played there as well.
“I want to break into it full time,” said Walsh, who currently works for an oilfield company.
He said he will likely move to Ontario in the future where his bandmates are — cousin Chad Walsh and bass/drummer Benjamin Schubert.
His cousin recorded, co-produced and played on his album and has already been working with Walsh on a next album.
“I went down there and had two or three weeks vacation so we just recorded every day,” he said of production last summer. His cousin would work on the mixes and send them to Walsh, who would listen to them and suggest changes.
Chad, though, wasn’t the only family member to help with his album. David’s wife Elisha Matthews’ artwork was chosen for the album cover. As well, Walsh recorded the heartbeat of his now 10-month-old son during an ultrasound and used it in the background of his song, Easy Way Out.
His CD can be purchased at Tom Lindl Guitar and Entertainment on main street or through iTunes. Anyone wanting to contact Walsh can email him at davidwalshandff@gmail.com.
