Half-way through the basketball season the Innisfail Cyclones teams are looking good on the court and in the league standings.

“Both teams are doing well,” said Jeff Anderson, athletics director and vice-principal at Innisfail Jr,/Sr. High. “Both teams are winning and losing.”

The senior girls’ team is in third place in the Chinook’s Edge South Athletics Association league, with a 3-2 record. They’re behind Olds High School and Hugh Sutherland School, both of whom are undefeated.

Allan Whitehead, the senior girls’ coach said their record includes a “heartbreaking” loss in overtime to the Olds team where the score was 47-46.

The senior boys’ team is in second place behind Olds, with a 4-1 record.

Both senior teams participated in a tournament at Olds on the weekend and finished on the consolation side of play. Anderson said the girls’ team lost one of their starting players to a knee injury.

The junior teams are holding great records so far, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams in first place in their league, Chinook’s Edge Junior High Athletic Association.

“The junior kids are doing incredible,” Anderson said. The girls’ team’s record is 5-1, while the boys are 5-0. The boys recently came in second place at a tournament in Caroline.

The teams won’t have a shot at the provincial title this year as the Innisfail team isn’t in the right league to compete but they are ramping up for the league championships. Anderson said there’s another three or four games left in the season to get ready to try and take the title.

Anderson said league finals would be held around the first week of March.
