Amazons host all star game

The Penhold Amazons were host to the 2012 All Star game for the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League Sunday.

Representatives from 10 teams were out on the ice Jan. 8, divided into two teams — the north and south division.

Four Amazons were picked for the southern division.

“It feels pretty special,” said Ciana Zweifel, of getting picked. “Normally you’re enemies with them during the season,” she said of getting a chance to play together.

Players were chosen by a committee, explained John Krall, co-coach with the Lethbridge Junior Eagles, who was one of six all-star coaches during the game.

“There’s a committee. And coaches pick other teams’ players so you’re not picking your own players.” He said it gives a chance for teams to play with players they’ve noticed playing well all season.

“The girls are thrilled to be picked,” added coach Keith Anderson for Mountain View Hericanes. “Only four or five girls from each team of about 20 get picked.”

The game started out with some jitters, but quickly turned fast, the coaches said between the second and third periods.

“They’re not holding back.”

The south team — made up of players from the Mountain View Hericanes, Calgary Warriors, Lethbridge Junior Eagles, Calgary Titans and Amazons, lost 3-5, but Amazon player Charissa Kadar took the loss in stride.

“You win some, you lose some. You just have to do your best and stay calm.”

The north team included players from Edmonton Wolves, Spruce Grove Stars, Sherwood Park Steele, Irma Chargers and the Fort Saskatchewan Fury.

The AJHL is for women 18 to 21 who want to continue to play at a competitive level. Glenn Ball, president of the AJFHL, said the all-star game is hopefully a way to get awareness out to the public about the league and the level of play it offers.

“Most of the players are full-time students with a part-time job, so it’s a huge commitment. But as we continue to grow and get better, the more we can get out that we have a competitive league.”
